Open and Close: A Unique Residential House Design

Creating Flexible Spaces for Modern Living

Open and Close stands out from other residential designs with its innovative rotatable door leaves at the foyer. Typically, the door leaves are placed overlapped as a grille, but in this design, they can be closed to provide privacy from the foyer. By closing both door leaves, the living room is isolated and transformed into a guest house. On the other hand, when connected together, the study and dining room become an important gathering place for the family.

The transparent sliding doors and blinds alongside the walkway further enhance the flexibility of the space, allowing for the separation of the guest and private areas. This partitioning of space into different functions adds to the uniqueness of Open and Close.

The design of Open and Close utilizes materials such as wood veneer, solid wood, stone, and landscape elements. With a total area of 205 square meters, this residential house offers a harmonious blend of indoor and outdoor spaces.

The project, which started in December 2017 and finished in June 2018, is located in Taichung City, Taiwan. Throughout the process, constant discussion and planning were key to overcoming any obstacles that arose.

By focusing on spatial planning and organization, Open and Close creates harmonious spaces that seamlessly transition from indoors to outdoors. The furniture and decorations within the design provide a distinctive way of living, enhancing the overall experience for the users.

Open and Close, designed by Lulu Cheng, has been recognized for its excellence in design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
